ANODO OVAL 117X43mm (AL)
Description
Function and technical context
The oval aluminum anode acts as active cathodic protection of the boat's submerged metal components, sacrificing itself electrochemically to prevent galvanic corrosion on critical parts such as the propeller, tail shaft, transom or outboard motor casing. Made of high-purity aluminum alloy, it is especially suitable for use in salty and brackish waters, where galvanic corrosion acts more aggressively on metals in contact with water. With dimensions of 117x43 mm in oval format, it offers a generous sacrificial surface and a geometry designed for direct fixation on flat surfaces of the hull, leg or stern accessories. Without effective cathodic protection, the structural and functional metals of the vessel are exposed to accelerated degradation that can compromise the integrity of the propulsion assembly and lead to costly breakdowns.
When to replace this part?
The clearest sign that the anode needs to be renewed is when it has lost between 50% and 75% of its mass: at that point it no longer offers sufficient protection and nearby metal elements begin to suffer from pitting, surface oxidation or loss of visible material. It is recommended to inspect the anodes at the beginning and end of each nautical season, as well as at each scheduled stranding, replacing them at least once a year on boats that regularly navigate in salt water. Renewing the anode preventively is the most economical maintenance measure to avoid damage to propellers, shafts and legs that can involve repairs of several hundred or thousands of euros.
