Description

Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode is a cathodic protection component that acts in the salt water circuit of the outboard motor. Its mission is to preferably oxidize in the face of galvanic corrosion, preventing the noble metals of the engine block, cylinder head, cooling pipe and internal components from suffering deterioration due to marine electrolysis. He works in the salt water cooling system, where potential differences between heterogeneous metals generate destructive electrochemical currents. Without a functional anode, the aluminum and stainless steel of the water chamber progressively corrode, compromising the tightness, heat transfer and structural integrity of the powertrain.

When to replace this part?

The sacrificial anode must be replaced when it shows visible erosion, rounding of the edges or loss of more than 50% of its mass; These signs indicate advanced consumption of its protective capacity. The recommended practice in marine navigation is to inspect the anode at the beginning of each season and replace it at the end of the summer campaign or after 200-300 hours of operation in salt water, depending on the level of salinity and electrochemical activity. Preventive replacement is the most economical measure to avoid costly engine block corrosion repairs, which require complete disassembly and machining.
