Its specific function is to sacrifice itself electrochemically, protecting itself against galvanic corrosion to preserve the internal metal parts of the cooling system—cylinder blocks, water jackets, and internal passages—from oxidation caused by contact with brackish or salt water. Without this operational anode, the ferrous metals and alloys of the engine suffer accelerated corrosion that compromises the tightness of the circuit and thermal transfer, accelerating the structural deterioration of the engine.
