Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode is a critical component in the cathodic protection of Yamaha, Mercury and similar marine engines. Installed in the motor casing or in salt water circulation areas, it acts as an electrochemical barrier that preferentially oxidizes before the noble metal parts of the motor, preventing galvanic corrosion. Its controlled degradation protects the water pump blades, the internal cooling pipes and the aluminum surfaces of the engine block, which would otherwise suffer perforation and loss of tightness.

When to replace this part?

The anode should be inspected at least once per boating season, especially after prolonged use in salt water or after periods of prolonged inactivity where galvanic corrosion accelerates. Symptoms of advanced wear include visible anode erosion (greater than 50% thickness reduction), white or green deposits around the installation area, or water leaks in motors with open circulation. Replacing it preventively before it is completely depleted avoids costly repairs to cylinders, cylinder heads or engine blocks that require stranding and partial scrapping of the propulsion equipment.
