Function and technical context

The impeller is the central component of the water cooling circuit in outboard and sterndrive motors. Its function is to pump water from the hull intake to the internal ducts of the engine, ensuring constant circulation that dissipates the heat generated during combustion. Coupled to the transmission shaft, it rotates continuously while the propeller is running, supporting variable pressures and speeds. A worn impeller drastically reduces the cooling flow rate, causing engine overheating, loss of power, accelerated deterioration of seals and cylinders, and in extreme cases, total blockage of the propulsion system.

When to replace this part?

The impellers suffer progressive wear due to friction and cavitation, requiring frequent inspection. The most obvious symptoms include reduced or no cooling water output from the drain pipe, abnormal increase in engine temperature, reduced performance, and unusual noise coming from the pump. It is recommended to inspect the impeller every 100 to 150 hours of operation or at the beginning of each navigation season, and replace it preventively every 300 to 400 hours in intense use. Preventive replacement during scheduled maintenance prevents unexpected breakdowns at sea and significantly extends engine life.
