Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode is an essential component in the cathodic protection of Yamaha marine engines, acting as a defensive barrier against electrochemical corrosion in the saltwater circuit. Made of aluminum, this anode is installed in critical areas of the cooling system where salt water comes into direct contact with the metal parts of the engine. Its main function is to preferentially rust rather than internal iron, steel and bronze components, preventing galvanic corrosion from deteriorating the engine casing, cooling pipes and cylinder liners. Without active cathodic protection, seawater would corrode the noble metals of the propellant, compromising its tightness and drastically reducing its useful life.

When to replace this part?

The sacrificial anode should be inspected before each boating season and replaced when it has lost 50-70% of its mass. Signs that it requires replacement include a significant reduction in volume, deep pitting, or fragmentation of the aluminum. Although there is no universal engine hour interval, recreational boating experience indicates that these anodes are consumed between one and two seasons of moderate use, depending on the salinity of the water, boating speed and the state of the cooling system. Performing the change preventatively before it is completely exhausted prevents the engine from being exposed to uncontrolled galvanic corrosion, an expensive and complicated breakdown to repair out of port.
