Description

Function and technical context

This zinc anode acts as a sacrificial element within the cooling circuit of marine petrol engines, protecting them through controlled galvanic corrosion. When in contact with the water that circulates through the cooling system, zinc preferentially oxidizes, preventing corrosion from attacking the internal metal components of the engine: cylinder liners, cylinder head, block and cooling ducts. Without active cathodic protection, salt water or brackish environments quickly degrade these critical parts, compromising engine tightness and potentially causing irreparable structural failure. Its installation is especially relevant on vessels that operate in coastal areas or estuaries, where the aggressiveness of the electrolytic medium is maximum.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the zinc anode has completed its cycle is the visible loss of material: when it has consumed more than a third of its mass, presents a homogeneous grayish color or shows superficial cracks, it no longer offers sufficient protection. It is recommended to inspect it at each seasonal start-up and replace it annually, or more frequently if the boat usually navigates in salty or brackish waters with high conductivity. Replacing it preventively at the beginning of each nautical campaign is the most economical measure to avoid severe damage to the engine block that requires expensive repairs in the workshop.
