Function and Technical Context

The sacrificial anode protects the submerged metal parts of the outboard motor through controlled galvanic corrosion: being a less noble metal (zinc or aluminum), it oxidizes before the motor's structural components, preventing electrochemical attack from damaging higher-cost components such as the lower unit, the propeller shaft, or the bevel gear. This anode is compatible with Johnson and Evinrude outboard motors from 9.9 to 15 HP, as well as with certain Suzuki models of equivalent power. Its proper condition is critical in moorings with stray electrical current, in ports with high vessel density, or in brackish and marine waters, where galvanic corrosion rate accelerates considerably. Without effective cathodic protection, damage to the motor's lower unit can necessitate complete replacement of the propulsion unit.

When to Replace This Component?

The clearest indication that the anode has completed its service life is a visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately half its volume, it should be replaced immediately, without waiting for it to disappear completely. As preventive maintenance practice, it is recommended to inspect the anode at least once per boating season and replace it systematically at each annual haul-out, regardless of its apparent condition, especially if the vessel remains in the water continuously. Replacing the sacrificial anode at each winter fitting-out is the most economical and effective measure to prevent electrolysis damage that, if not addressed in time, can render the motor lower unit unusable.
