Description
Function and Technical Context
The sacrificial anode protects the submerged metal parts of the outboard motor against galvanic corrosion, an electrochemical process that progressively destroys aluminum and steel alloys when the motor remains in water. Manufactured from zinc, this anode acts as a sacrificial electrode within the cathodic protection system of the propulsion unit: being an electrochemically more active metal, it corrodes instead of the structural components of the motor. In 4-stroke outboard motors such as those compatible with this reference, the anode is typically located on the skeg or at the lower part of the leg, areas especially exposed to saltwater and brackish water action. Its deterioration or absence causes accelerated corrosion in housings, propeller and transmission, resulting in costly failures and loss of structural integrity of the motor.
When to Replace This Component?
The clearest symptom that the anode needs replacement is the loss of more than 50% of its mass: when the zinc shows visible erosion, irregular surface or has significantly reduced in volume, it no longer provides effective protection. It is recommended to inspect the condition of the anode at least once per season and replace it preventively at the start of each boating season, especially in saltwater areas where wear is faster. Changing the anode before it is completely depleted is the most economical measure to prevent serious damage to the motor leg and transmission, repairs that can multiply the cost of this component several times over.
