Description

Function and technical context

This sacrificial anode made of aluminum is part of the cathodic protection system of the outboard motor. Its mission is to act as the preferred galvanic electrode, so that it is the one that corrodes instead of the structural metal parts of the engine - casings, shafts, propellers and supports - when the assembly is submerged in brackish or salt water. By electrically interposing between the base metal and the aqueous electrolyte, this component absorbs the electrochemical attack and preserves the integrity of the most expensive and critical elements of the propellant. A depleted or missing anode leaves these parts unprotected, accelerating corrosion to the point of causing serious structural failures and high-cost repairs.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the anode needs to be replaced is a reduction in mass of more than 50%, that is, when the aluminum block appears noticeably shrunken, cracked, or has lost its shape upon inspection. In boats that frequently sail in salt water, it is recommended to check the condition of the anode at the beginning and end of each nautical season, and replace it at least once a year or sooner if wear requires it. Preventively replacing it before it is completely depleted ensures continuous cathodic protection and avoids being exposed to costly corrosion repairs in hard-to-reach areas.
