Function and technical context

This aluminum anode acts as a galvanic sacrifice in the cathodic protection system of the Suzuki outboard motor, interposing a lower noble metal between the critical metal parts of the engine and the navigation water. Strategically located in the engine block or tail depending on the model, its function is to rust in a controlled manner to protect vital components such as the tail housing, propeller shaft and aluminum bodies of the power unit against galvanic and electrolytic corrosion. Without effective cathodic protection, corrosion directly attacks the structural parts of the engine, potentially causing irreversible damage to parts that require high repair costs. The aluminum formulation makes it especially suitable for navigation in both saltwater and fresh and brackish water, covering the wide variety of environments where Suzuki DF and DT engines operate.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious symptom that the anode has reached its useful life is a reduction in its mass of more than 50%, visually noticeable as a very reduced, deformed body or with intense erosion; At that point it no longer offers sufficient protection and the noble parts of the engine are exposed to corrosion. It is recommended to inspect the condition of the anodes at each beaching or at the beginning of each nautical season, and replace them preventively when they show wear greater than half their volume, regardless of the number of hours of navigation. Replacing the anode before it is completely depleted is the simplest and most economical measure to avoid costly repairs to the tail or engine block.
