Función y contexto técnico

El ánodo de sacrificio protege las piezas metálicas sumergidas del motor fuera de borda frente a la corrosión galvánica, un proceso electroquímico que degrada progresivamente aluminio, acero y otros metales en contacto con el agua salada o salobre. Al estar fabricado con una aleación de menor potencial electroquímico, el ánodo se oxida en lugar de los componentes críticos del motor, actuando como escudo protector del bloque, la hélice y los soportes metálicos. Su deterioro controlado es precisamente el indicador de que está cumpliendo su función correctamente. Sin una protección catódica activa, la corrosión avanza silenciosamente hasta comprometer elementos estructurales del grupo propulsor que resultan considerablemente más costosos de sustituir.

¿Cuándo sustituir esta pieza?

La señal más clara de que el ánodo debe reemplazarse es cuando ha perdido entre el 50 % y el 60 % de su volumen: en ese punto su capacidad protectora queda comprometida y ya no garantiza una protección catódica eficaz. Se recomienda inspeccionar el ánodo al menos una vez por temporada y sustituirlo de forma preventiva en cada varada anual, especialmente si la embarcación opera habitualmente en aguas saladas o salobres con alta conductividad. No esperar a que el ánodo esté completamente consumido: un motor sin protección activa puede sufrir daños por corrosión irreversibles en pocas semanas de navegación.
