This plate anode acts as cathodic protection in Yanmar powertrains and transmissions, sacrificing itself electrochemically to prevent galvanic corrosion in metal parts of higher structural value. When to replace this part?

The anodes must be inspected at the beginning and end of each nautical season: when the anode has lost approximately half of its mass or presents an irregular deformation and severely eroded surface, it is time to replace it without delay. An anode that is more than 50% consumed has exhausted its protective capacity, leaving the metal surfaces of the transmission exposed to galvanic corrosion. Replacing it preventively at each annual maintenance is the most economical practice to avoid damage to high-cost components such as housings or transmission shafts.
