Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are part of the boat's cathodic protection system, acting as an electrochemical barrier that absorbs galvanic corrosion rather than allowing it to damage the structural metal parts of the outboard motor. In Yanmar engines in the 75-85 hp range, the anode protects critical components such as the engine foot casing, the propeller shaft and other submerged metal surfaces that, without this protection, would be exposed to electrolytic corrosion accelerated by contact with salt or brackish water. Anode degradation is a natural and intentional process: if the anode is consumed correctly, it means that it is fulfilling its function and preserving the metallic integrity of the engine.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the sacrificial anode needs replacement is a visible reduction in its mass: when the anode has lost 50% to 60% of its volume, it must be replaced before it no longer provides effective protection. It is recommended to inspect the condition of the anode at least once per nautical season and, as a general rule in areas with salt water or high conductivity, replace it every complete season regardless of the degree of apparent wear. Replacing the anode preventively, reference TEN01302, is a minimal investment compared to the cost of repairing or replacing engine foot components affected by galvanic corrosion.
