Function and technical context

The Yanmar engine sacrificial anode acts as cathodic protection of the block and submerged metal components, absorbing galvanic corrosion instead of letting it affect structural parts of the engine. It works in the seawater cooling system and in the external areas of the engine in contact with the aquatic environment, where the difference in electrochemical potential between different metals generates an accelerated corrosion process. The 3/8" thread facilitates its direct installation on the anchoring points provided by Yanmar, ensuring continuous electrical contact with the metal mass of the motor. If this anode is completely consumed without being replaced, the galvanic currents directly attack the motor casing, heat exchangers and other alloy components, causing irreversible damage that can render the propeller useless.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes must be inspected at the beginning and end of each nautical season, and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, regardless of the time elapsed, since their consumption rate varies depending on the salinity of the water, the density of galvanic currents at the mooring and the hours of navigation. A completely consumed anode or reduced to a metal core without active zinc is a sign that the motor has been unprotected for a critical period, and may be accompanied by visible pitting in the housing or cooling plugs. Preventive replacement of this component at the beginning of each season is the most economical and effective measure to avoid major repairs to the engine mount or cooling circuit.
