Function and technical context

This zinc anode acts as a sacrificial element within the cathodic protection system of the marine engine, interposing itself between the noble metals of the boat and the electrochemical corrosion process that occurs in seawater. Being a less noble metal than aluminum, stainless steel or brass present in pump bodies, plugs and cooling circuits, zinc corrodes preferentially, preserving the structural integrity of these components. If the anode is completely depleted without being replaced, galvanic attacks begin to degrade expensive parts of the cooling system and engine block, potentially causing leaks, blockages and serious breakdowns that compromise the operation of the boat.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious symptom that the anode has completed its cycle is a visible mass loss of more than 50% of the initial volume; When zinc appears greatly reduced, cracked or completely consumed, it no longer provides effective protection. It is recommended to check the condition of the anodes during each seasonal maintenance and replace them at least once a year in salty or brackish water, and every two seasons in fresh water. Getting ahead of total wear avoids having to repair or change aluminum components of the cooling circuit, the replacement of which is considerably more expensive.
