KIT ANODOS B POWERHEAD ZINC
Description
Function and technical context
The zinc anodes act as active galvanic protection in the engine block or powerhead, sacrificing themselves electrochemically to protect the metal parts of the marine engine against corrosion. This anode kit is designed specifically for the powerhead assembly, which groups the upper components of the outboard or inboard engine, including the cylinder block, cylinder head and aluminum components exposed to salt or brackish water. Without adequate cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion can irreversibly deteriorate the engine block, cylinder head covers and other high-cost structural parts, compromising the mechanical integrity of the powertrain. Zinc is the ideal material for installations in salt and brackish water due to its lower electrochemical potential than marine aluminum.
When to replace this part?
Zinc anodes must be inspected at the beginning of each nautical season and replaced when they show wear greater than 50% of their mass, when they show cracks, detachments or a crystallized surface that indicates electrochemical saturation. In installations in salt water with high galvanic activity, it is common for the powerhead anodes to require renewal annually or even every two years depending on the type of water and navigation time. Replacing the complete kit preventively before each season guarantees that the engine block is protected at all times, avoiding repairs to corroded cylinder heads or blocks that can multiply the cost of the intervention.
