Description

Function and technical context

The sacrificial anodes of the trim tab act as cathodic protection in the transom area, an area especially exposed to galvanic corrosion caused by contact between dissimilar metals in an electrolytic medium such as seawater or brackish water. The trim tab—stabilizing fin located at the bottom of the tail or transom—is in permanent contact with the water during navigation, which makes it a critical point for corrosive attack. This aluminum anode kit is formulated specifically for salt and brackish waters, offering superior galvanic protection than zinc anodes in these conditions, and is ideal for Mercury outboard engines and sterile propellers. If the trim tab anodes wear completely without replacement, corrosion directly attacks the base metal of the trim tab and transom, which can lead to costly structural damage and compromise the boat's maneuverability.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes should be inspected at the beginning of each season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, without waiting for them to be completely consumed. An exhausted trim tab anode is visually recognized because it has a very reduced surface, fragmented or with exposed screws; If the metal trim tab itself shows pitting, erosion or irregular discoloration, the anode has not been renewed for too long. As a general rule for boats in regular use, annual replacement at the beginning of the season is the preventive practice recommended by specialized workshops to avoid irreversible damage to the stern structure.
