The drive pinion is the driving gear of the transmission system in outboard motors, responsible for transferring power from the crankshaft to the propeller through the drive shaft. This component works submerged in the gearbox lubrication fluid, supporting variable torsional loads depending on the rotation speed and navigation conditions. A damaged pinion causes loss of traction, abnormal vibrations during acceleration and, in extreme cases, the inability to transmit power to the propeller, leaving the boat without the ability to move.

When to replace this part?

The main symptoms of pinion wear include metallic noises in the gearbox, difficulty engaging, progressive loss of revolutions under load and a rough feel when changing gears. Although there is no fixed replacement interval, checking the gear teeth should be included in the annual maintenance of the tail unit, especially if sailing in areas with sand or sediment.
