Function and technical context

The zinc anode is a sacrificial component that protects metal engine parts against galvanic corrosion in salt and fresh water environments. Installed in the engine cooling circuit, it acts by preferentially consuming critical components such as the cylinder head, engine block and cooling pipes. Without this active protection, corrosive water would directly attack the metals of the cooling system, causing perforations, coolant leaks and water entry into cylinders, which would lead to engine seizure and irreversible damage.

When to replace this part?

The zinc anode should be inspected at least once per boating season; If it presents erosion greater than 50% of its volume, it requires immediate change. Indirect symptoms of a depleted anode include engine overheating, white deposits on the cooling outlets, and accelerated corrosion on other metal components in the circuit. Preventatively replacing the anode each season or after 100-150 hours of operation in salt water avoids costly repairs to cylinders and cylinder heads that can leave the boat immobilized.
