Function and technical context

The head gasket is a critical component of the engine sealing system that seals the cylinder head cover against the ingress of water and moisture. In Yamaha marine engines, this gasket works in conditions of constant vibration and thermal variation, avoiding leaks that could compromise the cooling system and internal lubrication. Its deterioration causes losses of coolant, entry of salt water into the combustion chamber and, consequently, accelerated corrosion of internal components and progressive loss of engine power.

When to replace this part?

The cap gasket should be inspected at each seasonal maintenance check and replaced when bleeding is observed around the cap, coolant color changes to milky hues, or presence of oily residue in the cooling water. Although there is no fixed change interval, accelerated wear can be caused by prolonged exposure to salt water without subsequent rinsing or extreme thermal cycling. Preventive replacement during winter maintenance prevents unexpected breakdowns during the boating season and protects the integrity of the engine against galvanic corrosion.
