The impeller is the central component of the engine's water pump, responsible for circulating coolant through the block and combustion chambers. This turbine with flexible blades takes the cooling water and propels it under pressure into the internal passages of the engine, maintaining the operating temperature within safe parameters. It works in the water cooling system, subjected to continuous rotation and exposure to salt or fresh water depending on the navigation environment. Its progressive wear reduces the efficiency of the coolant flow, potentially causing engine overheating, loss of power and, in critical cases, block seizure.

When to replace this part?

The impellers present characteristic symptoms of aging: visible erosion of the blades, partial breaks, crystallization due to lime deposits or loss of flexibility of the rubber. It is recommended to check the impeller every boating season or every 300-400 hours of operation, especially if operating in salt water or turbid water with sediment. Performing the replacement preventively during major maintenance tasks avoids unforeseen breakdowns in navigation and considerably extends the useful life of the engine.
