Description

Function and technical context

The thru-hull with a 1 1/4" brass grate is a structural accessory for a boat's seawater cooling system: it passes through the hull and allows the controlled entry of water that feeds the engine cooling circuit or other on-board systems. The integrated strainer intake grate acts as the first physical filter, retaining algae, mussels, coarse sand and other debris before they reach the water pump or exchanger. Being made of brass, it offers superior resistance to corrosion in salt water environments versus ferrous materials, and guarantees the tightness of penetration into the hull. A thru-hull in poor condition can cause both a restriction of the cooling flow - with the consequent risk of overheating of the engine - and, in the worst case scenario, a water leak that compromises the safety of the boat.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate that the thru-hull or its grill needs inspection or replacement are: visible reduction in the cooling water flow (the engine reaches high temperature more quickly), advanced galvanic corrosion on the thread or brass body, deformation or breakage of the grill that no longer filters properly, and leaks or sweating around the penetration in the hull. It is recommended to inspect the thru-hull at each docking or seasonal maintenance, paying special attention to the condition of the grille and the exterior sealing. Replacing the assembly preventively when the first signs of corrosion or mechanical damage are detected avoids breakdowns in the cooling system and, above all, risky situations during navigation.
