Function and technical context

The 1 1/2" brass thru-hull is a sealing accessory that passes through the hull of the boat to allow the passage of water, gases or fluids between the interior and exterior of the boat. It works in bilge systems, bilge emptying, bathtub drainage, gray water evacuation or refrigeration connections, forming part of the set of elements that guarantee the integrity of the hull below the waterline. Made of brass, it offers high resistance to marine corrosion and the mechanical stresses inherent to the hull installation, being suitable for salt and fresh water environments. A thru-hull in poor condition directly compromises the structural safety of the boat, since any leakage failure at a point below the waterline can lead to uncontrolled water entry.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate the need to replace a thru-hull are the appearance of humidity, green or whitish efflorescence around the fitting, visible corrosion on the brass body, difficulty in operating the associated seacock or small leaks in the installation area. It is recommended that all thru-hulls be visually inspected at each annual docking or seasonal maintenance, checking tightness, sealing status and material integrity. Preventively replacing a damaged thru-hull avoids emergency situations in navigation and higher-cost repairs in the stranding workshop.
