The turbocharger is the component responsible for forcing a greater amount of compressed air into the engine cylinders, thus increasing combustion efficiency and power delivered. It works in the engine's intake and exhaust system: it harnesses the energy of the exhaust gases to drive a turbine which, in turn, drives the intake compressor. In highly demanding industrial and marine diesel engines, such as Volvo Penta's TAD and TWD series, the turbo is a critical element in maintaining engine performance and response under load. A deteriorated turbocharger causes noticeable power loss, increased fuel consumption, excessive exhaust fumes and, in severe cases, damage due to insufficient lubrication of the internal bearings. When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a turbocharger in poor condition include progressive loss of power and acceleration, presence of bluish or black smoke from the exhaust, metallic noise or abnormal whistling noise coming from the turbo, and high oil consumption without visible external leaks. It is recommended to inspect the turbocharger during each seasonal maintenance and replace it if there is any sign of play in the turbine shaft, oil leaks from the seals or damage to the blades. Acting preventively at the first symptoms prevents fragments of the damaged turbo from reaching the cylinders, which would lead to a much more costly engine breakdown.
