ANODE VETUS KW3
Description
Function and technical context
The sacrificial anode acts as a protective element within the boat's cathodic protection system, absorbing galvanic corrosion that would otherwise attack the noble metal parts of the engine and hull. Manufactured by Vetus under the reference KW3, this component is installed in strategic areas exposed to salt, brackish or fresh water where the difference in electrochemical potential between different metals causes accelerated degradation. Its function is to sacrifice itself electrochemically before critical structural parts such as the tailshaft, propeller, saildrive or transmission elements. Without a healthy anode, galvanic corrosion can compromise high-cost components in a single boating season.
When to replace this part?
Sacrificial anodes should be inspected at least at the beginning and end of each sailing season, and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, have an irregular, heavily eroded surface, or visible cracks appear. A clear symptom that the anode has exhausted its useful life is the appearance of corrosion (oxidation, pitting or greenish discoloration) on the adjacent metal parts that it should protect. As a professional rule, replacing the Vetus KW3 anode preventively at the beginning of each season is the most economical practice to avoid irreparable damage to transmission parts or submerged structures that involve high-cost repairs when stranded.
