Description

Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are essential elements in the cathodic protection of vessels, acting as an electrochemical barrier against galvanic corrosion that affects submerged metal parts such as propellers, axles, transmissions and hulls. This 60 mm hexagonal anode from Vetus is made of zinc, an ideal material for boats that navigate in salt or brackish water, and is installed directly on the tail shaft or at junction points where localized protection is required thanks to its hexagonal geometry, which facilitates assembly with a standard open-end wrench. By sacrificing gradually, it preserves the integrity of the noblest metallic components of the propulsion system, preventing pitting, material loss and, ultimately, serious structural failures. The manufacturer reference is TEN03500.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the anode needs to be replaced is when it has lost between 50% and 70% of its mass: at that point it no longer offers sufficient protection and nearby components begin to rust or show superficial pitting. The inspection should be carried out at least once a season, coinciding with the annual beaching of the boat, although in areas with high electrical conductivity in the water or with erratic currents a mid-season inspection may be necessary. Replacing the anode preventively is the most economical maintenance measure available: the cost of a new anode is negligible compared to the repair or replacement of a shaft, propeller or thru-hull damaged by galvanic corrosion.
