Description

Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are the key element of cathodic protection on any vessel: they absorb galvanic corrosion that, if left unchecked, would destroy submerged metal components such as shafts, propellers, rudders and hulls. This 140x40x22 mm oval anode acts as a sacrificial mass, oxidizing in a controlled manner to protect the aluminum and stainless steel alloys of the propulsion assembly and the hull. Being manufactured with a specific zinc alloy—standard material for salt and brackish waters—it guarantees efficient electrochemical protection at the appropriate dissolution potential. Its oval geometry facilitates fixation on profiles, keels, rudders and structures with flat housing, covering a large protective surface without interfering with the hydrodynamic flow of the boat.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that an anode needs to be replaced is when it has lost between 50% and 60% of its mass: at that point it can no longer offer effective protection and the noble metals of the propulsion assembly are exposed to galvanic corrosion. Visually, a spent anode appears very reduced in size, irregular, with cavities and sometimes almost disintegrated; On the contrary, a completely intact anode when removed from the water may indicate that there is no correct electrical contact. The preventive review and replacement must be carried out at the beginning of each nautical season - or every 12 months in continuous use - to avoid irreversible damage to propellers, shafts and metal structures whose repair involves a much higher cost than the anode itself.
