Description

Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are the main element of cathodic protection in boats, acting as an electrochemical barrier that absorbs galvanic corrosion before it affects the noble metal surfaces of the hull, propeller, shafts or engine legs. This 115x45 mm oval anode is installed directly on submerged structures - keels, aluminum hulls, outboard or inboard motor mounts - where the difference in electrical potential between dissimilar metals causes accelerated corrosion in salt or fresh water. Its oval geometry facilitates mounting on flat or slightly curved surfaces, ensuring continuous and effective electrical contact throughout the sailing season. Without proper cathodic protection, submerged metal components can suffer pitting, surface erosion and structural failures resulting in high-cost repairs or even loss of the vessel.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes must be visually inspected at least at the beginning and end of each sailing season: when the anode has lost more than 50% of its mass or presents a hard, cracked, whitish surface (a sign of depletion of active zinc or aluminum), it is essential to replace it immediately. In areas with high water conductivity - ports with dispersed electrical current or waters with high salinity - wear can be completed in a single season, so it is recommended to check the condition of the anode every 3-4 months during the period of active use. Replacing the anode preventively, before it is completely exhausted, is the most economical measure to avoid irreversible damage due to corrosion in propellers, shafts and aluminum structures.
