Description

Function and technical context

The oval-shaped sacrificial anode is an essential component in the cathodic protection system of boats and outboard or inboard engines. Its function is to oxidize in a controlled manner to protect the metal parts of the propulsion unit - such as the shaft, propeller or engine body - against galvanic corrosion produced by contact with salt, brackish or fresh water. Acting as a sacrificial metal, the anode attracts electrochemical degradation and concentrates it on itself, preserving the structural integrity of the most expensive and critical components of the propulsion system. Without adequate anodic protection, galvanic attack can cause serious and irreversible damage to the aluminum or steel of the transmission and hull in submerged areas.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes should be inspected at least once a season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass or exhibit severe irregular and surface erosion. If the metal of the propeller, shaft or motor foot surfaces is observed to show pitting, reddish discoloration or progressive erosion, it is a sign that the anode is exhausted and has ceased to protect properly. Preventive change is recommended at the beginning of each nautical season, especially in areas with high salinity water or with parasitic electrical currents in the port, since a consumed anode leaves the aluminum components unprotected in a matter of weeks.
