Description

Function and technical context

The thermostat regulates the temperature of the cooling circuit in Suzuki outboard engines, controlling the flow of seawater to the heat exchanger so that the propeller reaches and maintains its optimal operating temperature. Integrated into the water cooling system, this component remains closed during engine warm-up – retaining coolant to accelerate warm-up – and opens at 71°C to allow full circulation and prevent overheating. An incorrect opening or blocking of the thermostat can lead to operation at excessive temperatures, damage to the head gaskets, internal deformations or, conversely, an engine that never reaches its efficient temperature range, with increased consumption and premature wear. This thermostat, identified with the reference 17670-90J10 (officially replaced by 17670-90J11), is designed for medium-high range Suzuki four-stroke engines, from 70 hp to 300 hp.

When to replace this part?

The most common signs of a faulty thermostat in Suzuki outboard engines are: the temperature needle that rises rapidly to the red zone or, conversely, never reaches the normal operating level; frequent activation of the overtemperature alarm without apparent cause in the water circuit; or presence of steam and loss of performance in sustained navigation. It is recommended to inspect the thermostat at each seasonal inspection and replace it preventively every 300-500 hours of operation or in the event of any symptoms of thermal irregularity, since a component locked in the closed position can cause severe damage to the engine in a matter of minutes. Anticipating its replacement is the most economical solution to a serious breakdown at sea.
