The REC87619 seal and gasket kit includes the essential sealing components for the outboard motor’s sealing system, ensuring that oil and water do not enter critical areas of the engine. The seals act on the rotating shafts, preventing lubricant from leaking out or seawater from entering the crankcase, while the gaskets ensure a tight seal between static surfaces such as covers, pump bodies, and housings. A failure in any of these components can result in fluid mixing, loss of lubrication, accelerated internal corrosion, and irreversible damage to the crankshaft or lower drive. This kit is specifically designed for 20- and 25-hp Johnson and Evinrude models manufactured between 1979 and 1982, periods during which the combination of elastomer materials and sealants had to meet the demands of intensive use in saltwater or freshwater.

When should this part be replaced?

The most common signs of deterioration in outboard seals and gaskets include oil stains in the water beneath the engine, a drop in the lubricant level in the foot without apparent cause, the presence of emulsified water in the transmission oil (whitish or milky discoloration), and visible leaks around the crankcase covers or lower housing. It is recommended to inspect these components during every seasonal maintenance check and replace them as a preventive measure whenever the stern drive or engine block is removed, since elastomers age due to thermal cycles even if they do not show obvious leaks. Replacing the complete seal and gasket kit during a scheduled service is considerably more economical than dealing with a breakdown caused by water ingress or lubricant loss while underway.
