Description

Function and technical context

The forward gear is part of the transmission assembly of the conical group located in the outboard motor foot gearbox. Its mission is to transmit engine torque to the propeller shaft when the forward position is selected, meshing with the reverse pinion and dog clutch assembly to rotate the propeller shaft in the correct direction. It is a component subjected to high torsional stress and friction in each clutch maneuver, so its condition is decisive for the correct propulsion of the boat. Premature wear or breakage of the teeth causes a complete loss of forward traction, metallic knocks on the foot and, in severe cases, can block the selector mechanism and render the motor unusable out of the water.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of forward sprocket wear are: difficulty engaging gear, slipping or spontaneous disengagement under load, metallic noise or crackling when shifting into forward gear, and abnormal vibration in the foot. It is recommended to visually inspect the pinion teeth each time the foot is removed to check the gearbox or when transmission oil leaks are detected; In intensive use engines, it is advisable to check the assembly every 300-400 hours of navigation. Replacing the pinion at the first sign of wear prevents breakdowns at sea and further damage to the conical assembly, the repair of which is significantly more expensive.
