Function and technical context

The stern anode in a 120 mm diameter disc made of zinc acts as galvanic protection of the stern group of the boat, sacrificing itself electrochemically to prevent corrosion of nobler metal components such as stainless steel, aluminum and bronze of the transmission. It works within the cathodic protection system, located in the stern area where exposure to salt or brackish water generates galvanic currents capable of destroying shafts, propellers and casings in a matter of months. Its correct installation is essential to preserve the structural integrity of the stern group: without a sacrificial anode in good condition, corrosion advances silently and can disable high-cost components that would be out of use without prior notice.

When to replace this part?

A zinc anode must be replaced when it has lost approximately 50% of its mass, when it has an irregular, highly corroded surface or when visible corrosion appears on the adjacent metal parts of the stern group, an unequivocal sign that the anode no longer fulfills its protective function. Standard practice in marine mechanics is to inspect and replace anodes at least once a season, or each time the boat leaves the water for docking or maintenance, especially in high salinity waters where wear accelerates. Replacing the anode preventively is the most economical maintenance measure available: the cost of an anode is negligible compared to the repair or replacement of a shaft, propeller or transmission housing damaged by galvanic corrosion.
