Description

Function and technical context

The aft anode in a 100 mm diameter disc made of zinc acts as cathodic protection of the aft area of the boat, sacrificing itself electrochemically to protect the noble metal parts—tail shaft, propeller, steering box and other submerged components—against galvanic corrosion. Its disc geometry facilitates direct installation on the stern or stern, guaranteeing stable electrical contact with the metal mass of the boat. Zinc is the ideal material for salty and brackish waters, where the electrochemical potential of this metal makes it the perfect sacrifice compared to bronzes, stainless steels and aluminum alloys. If this anode is depleted or its replacement is omitted, galvanic corrosion directly attacks the structural and propulsion parts, generating costly damage and even compromising the integrity of the boat.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious symptom that the zinc anode has completed its cycle is the reduction of its mass by more than 50% compared to its initial size, at which point its protection capacity drops drastically and leaves the parts it must protect exposed; The appearance of pitting or visible corrosion on the propeller, shaft or stern accessories is also a warning sign. It is recommended to inspect the anode at the beginning and end of each sailing season, and replace it preventively at least once a year or sooner if wear requires it, especially in areas of high salinity or with parasitic electrical currents in the port. Renewing the anode before it is completely used up is the most economical measure to avoid replacements of the shaft, propeller or horn, repairs that can multiply the cost by several orders of magnitude.
