Description

Function and technical context

The aft anode in a Ø 230 mm disc made of aluminum alloy acts as cathodic protection of the transom and the submerged metal elements of the boat, sacrificing itself electrochemically to prevent galvanic corrosion in structural and mechanical components of higher value. It works in the passive anti-corrosion protection system, being especially relevant in installations with outboard motors, outboard units or stern-mounted propulsion groups where the metal surface is continuously exposed to salt or brackish water. The aluminum alloy used in this anode makes it ideal for salt and saline waters of medium to high salinity, offering an adequate electrochemical potential to protect stainless steels, copper alloys and structural aluminum of the hull. If this anode is depleted or not replaced in time, the metal components of the engine and stern are left unprotected against galvanic corrosion, which can lead to pitting, structural weakening and serious damage to the supports and propulsion elements.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes should be inspected at the beginning and end of each nautical season: when the anode has lost approximately 50% of its mass or has a completely irregular, eroded and deeply cratered surface, it is time to replace it without delay. Unlike zinc anodes, aluminum anodes may present a surface layer of white oxide that does not always indicate exhaustion; It is advisable to lightly scrape the surface to evaluate the remaining material. The professional recommendation is to replace the stern anode preventively once a season in areas of high salinity or every two seasons in fresh waters, since an exhausted anode means exposing the stern and hardware to corrosion that can render parts of much higher cost unusable.
