Description

Function and technical context

The aft anode in an aluminum disc with a diameter of 160 mm acts as a sacrificial cathodic protector, interposing its metallic mass between the hull and the submerged metal elements of the boat to absorb galvanic corrosion. It works directly on the transom cathodic protection system, protecting itself instead of allowing corrosion to attack critical components such as the propeller, shaft, gearbox or steering plate. The aluminum alloy makes it especially suitable for salt and brackish waters, where electrolytic corrosion acts more aggressively than in fresh water. If this component is completely consumed without being replaced in time, the structural metal elements of the propeller and stern are exposed to accelerated corrosion, which can lead to irreversible damage and high-cost repairs.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the disc anode needs to be replaced is a reduction in mass of more than 50% compared to the initial size, or the appearance of pitting and corrosion on the surface of the stern or propeller, an indication that the anode no longer provides sufficient protection. As a general maintenance rule, aluminum anodes should be inspected at the beginning and end of each nautical season, and replaced at least once a year on boats that remain launched in salt water. Replacing the anode preventively before it is completely depleted is the most economical measure to avoid replacing high-cost parts such as shafts, propellers or stern hardware.
