Description

Function and technical context

The 125mm aft anode is the sacrificial element responsible for protecting the boat's submerged metal surfaces from galvanic corrosion. It acts as an active electrode in the cathodic protection system, absorbing electrochemical wear that would otherwise affect the propeller, shaft, cavitator and other parts that are more expensive and difficult to replace. Its position at the stern permanently exposes it to salt, brackish or fresh water, making it a critical component for the structural integrity of the outboard drive. Without an anode in proper condition, the noble metals in the tail are exposed to accelerated electrolytic corrosion, with the risk of pitting, embrittlement and irreparable mechanical failures.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the aft anode needs replacement is the loss of more than 50% of its mass: when the body appears clearly eroded, with irregular edges or fragmented, it has stopped offering effective protection. As a general rule, the stern anodes should be inspected at least once a season and replaced preventively at the beginning of each navigation campaign, or sooner if the boat remains in an area of high electrical conductivity of the water or close to electrical installations in the port. Renewing the entire anode—including the fixing core—before it is completely used up is the most economical measure to avoid major repairs to propellers, shafts and exhaust elbows.
