STERN ANODE 125mm.
Description
Function and technical context
The 125 mm stern anode is a cathodic protection element designed to be mounted in the stern area of the boat, acting as an electrochemical sacrifice against galvanic corrosion. Its function is to attract corrosion that would otherwise attack noble metallic components of the hull, rudder, propeller and propulsion systems. Being made of zinc or a highly reactive alloy, it oxidizes in a controlled manner instead of damaging adjacent metal structures. Without adequate cathodic protection, stern structural metals can suffer accelerated corrosion that compromises the integrity and safety of the vessel, especially in salt or brackish waters.
When to replace this part?
The stern anodes should be inspected at least once a season and replaced when they have lost 30% to 50% of their mass, or when they have a marked, irregular wear surface. A clear symptom that the anode is depleted is the appearance of pitting or rust spots on the hull, rudder or propeller, indicating that galvanic corrosion is already attacking the structural metals. It is recommended to change the stern anode preventively at each annual stranding: doing so on time avoids costly repairs to the propulsion elements and guarantees protection throughout the sailing season.
