Description

Function and technical context

This zinc collar anode for GORI saildrive with three blades with a diameter of 18 inches acts as a galvanic protector of the shaft and propeller, sacrificing itself electrochemically to prevent corrosion from attacking the noble metal components of the submerged transmission. It works within the boat's cathodic protection system, forming part of the set of sacrificial anodes that protect the GORI saildrive, shaft and folding propeller against electrolytic corrosion produced by galvanic currents in seawater. Its correct installation is critical: a depleted or absent anode leaves the saildrive metals exposed to accelerated degradation that can compromise the structural integrity of the shaft, propeller and transmission bushings, generating costly and dangerous breakdowns in navigation. The collar format allows for safe and concentric mounting around the axis, guaranteeing an effective sacrificial surface and continuous electrical contact with the piece it protects.

When to replace this anode?

The clearest sign that the collar anode needs to be replaced is when it has lost between 50% and 60% of its mass: at that point you no longer have enough sacrificial material to protect for the rest of the season. Other indications are the presence of pitting, erosion or discoloration on the metal surfaces of the shaft or saildrive components close to the anode, indicating that the cathodic protection has failed. It is recommended to inspect and replace the zinc anode at each annual docking, before the seasonal launch, and review its condition mid-year if the boat sails in waters with high conductivity or in areas with intense galvanic currents; Replacing it preventively is always more economical than repairing the GORI shaft or propeller due to corrosion.
