Description

Function and technical context

The 2-inch aluminum shaft collar (reference REC9116AL) is a component of the shaft line transmission system on boats with tailshaft propulsion. Its main function is to fix and center the propeller shaft, limiting axial displacement and maintaining correct alignment between the shaft and the structural supports of the hull. It works in close relationship with the bushing, the stuffing box and the axle bearings, forming an assembly that guarantees the mechanical integrity of the transmission. A damaged collar or one with excessive clearance can cause abnormal vibrations in the shaft line, acceleration of bearing wear and, in serious cases, misalignment of the propeller with direct loss of propulsion performance and risk of water entering the hull.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate that the shaft collar needs to be checked or replaced are: noticeable vibration in the rudder or hull floor at medium and high speeds, metallic noise or hum from the shaft horn, and visible wear or radial play detected when manually moving the shaft while the boat is grounded. It is recommended to inspect the collar at each seasonal beaching and replace it preventively if there is any sign of galvanic corrosion in the aluminum alloy, especially in saltwater environments. Anticipating failure prevents secondary damage to the stuffing box and bearings, repairs that are considerably more expensive than replacing the gland itself.
