Description

Function and technical context

The 50 mm aluminum shaft collar is an axial positioning and retention component that works directly on the boat's drive shaft, ensuring that it maintains its correct longitudinal position within the propulsion assembly. Its function within the transmission system is fundamental: it prevents axial displacement of the shaft under the thrust loads generated by the propeller during navigation, both in forward and reverse gear. The aluminum manufacturing provides a good relationship between mechanical resistance and lightness, being suitable for installations where galvanic corrosion is controlled by correctly sized sacrificial anodes. A damaged collar, poorly adjusted or with excessive play can cause abnormal vibrations in the shaft, premature wear of the stern tube bearing, and even damage to the sealing seal of the stuffing box, compromising the integrity of the housing.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate that the shaft collar requires replacement are: noticeable vibration in the shaft during navigation that does not disappear when balancing the propeller, detectable axial play when manually moving the shaft in the longitudinal direction, or visible signs of corrosion, cracks or deformation in the part during the beached inspection. It is recommended to check the condition of the collar at each annual grounding or each time the shaft line assembly is accessed for stuffing box maintenance or stern tube bearing replacement. Replacing this element preventively when the first symptoms are noticed avoids chain damage to higher cost components such as the axle, horn or stern bearing.
