Description

Function and technical context

The 45 mm shaft collar is a retaining and supporting element that works directly on the aft tail drive shaft, ensuring its axial positioning and avoiding unwanted longitudinal displacements during the operation of the propeller. It is part of the transmission and sealing system of the powertrain, acting as a structural support point that keeps the axle within its planned working stroke. Its correct condition is essential to preserve the alignment between the shaft and the adjacent seals or seals: a worn or cracked collar can cause excessive vibration in the shaft, entry of water into the interior of the hull or accelerated deterioration of the adjacent bearings and seals. It is, therefore, a critical component whose silent degradation can lead to serious breakdowns in the transmission system if it is not detected in time.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a bad shaft collar include abnormal vibration or rattling noticeable in the console or transom, excessive axial play in the drive shaft when moved manually, or the development of play that causes premature wear in adjacent seals and bearings. It is recommended to visually inspect the collar during each seasonal maintenance and replace it preventively if there is any sign of deformation, advanced corrosion or loss of fit on the shaft. Replacing this component early is a low-cost measure that avoids major driveshaft repairs, especially if the boat operates in salt waters where galvanic corrosion accelerates deterioration.
