Description

Function and technical context

The shaft collar is the axial fastening and positioning element that embraces the transmission shaft in the boat's propulsion line, keeping the shaft centered and fixing its longitudinal position within the entire transmission system. Made of aluminum (AL), this component works directly on the Ø 1-3/4'' shaft in standard configuration (STD), guaranteeing correct alignment between the propeller, stern tube bearing and motor. Its integrity is essential to avoid abnormal vibrations, premature wear of the horn bearing and the entry of water into the interior of the hull; A deteriorated or poorly adjusted collar causes axial play in the shaft, which translates into loss of propulsive efficiency and progressive damage to the sealing system of the stuffing box or mechanical seal.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a worn or damaged shaft collar include noticeable vibrations in the hull at different sailing speeds, metallic knocking in the shaft area at low speed, and visible axial or radial play when moving the shaft manually with the engine stopped. As it is a component subjected to continuous traction, torsion and exposure to salt or fresh water, it should be inspected during each seasonal maintenance and replaced if there is any sign of corrosion, cracks or looseness. Replacing the collar preventatively during the annual beaching prevents more costly failures in the stern tube bearing, stuffing box or even the drive shaft itself.
