Description

Function and technical context

The 40 mm shaft collar acts as a retaining and axial positioning element for the drive shaft in the tail line of a boat, preventing unwanted longitudinal displacement of the drive shaft during engine operation. It works within the mechanical transmission system, located between the horn bearing or stuffing box and the propeller, constituting a fundamental support and fixation point for the correct alignment of the assembly. Fabricado en aluminio, resulta especialmente adecuado para instalaciones donde se busca reducir el peso del tren de transmisión o donde la compatibilidad con ánodos sacrificiales de aluminio es prioritaria para la protección galvánica del sistema. A collar in poor condition or incorrectly adjusted can cause vibrations in the shaft, premature wear of the horn, loss of tightness in the stuffing box and even progressive damage to the stern bearing, compromising the integrity of the entire transmission line.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate that the shaft collar needs to be checked or replaced include noticeable abnormal vibrations in the deck or floor of the boat at certain revolutions, visible end play or lateral oscillation of the drive shaft, and accelerated wear or deterioration of the adjacent stuffing box or horn. It is recommended to inspect the collar during each seasonal maintenance, checking the tightness of the fixing screws, the absence of corrosion on the aluminum body and that there are no friction marks on the shaft. Replacing the collar preventively at the slightest sign of corrosion or looseness prevents more costly breakdowns at sea, such as shaft displacement and subsequent failure of the stern seal.
