Description

Function and technical context

The 34mm shaft collar is a retaining and sealing component that acts directly on the aft tail drive shaft, working in the propulsion system as an axial retaining element and structural support of the tail shaft. Its mission is to keep the shaft correctly positioned within the housing, avoiding longitudinal displacements that would compromise the alignment between the shaft, the horn and the propeller. A damaged or poorly adjusted collar can cause abnormal vibrations in the shaft, premature wear of the stern horn and, in extreme cases, water entering the interior of the hull through the stuffing box, with the serious consequences that this implies for the safety of the boat. The reference REC9108AL corresponds to a version made of aluminum, a material that offers a strength-to-weight ratio suitable for fresh and salt water environments in outboard and inboard propulsion applications.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a worn or damaged shaft collar are: noticeable axial play in the tail shaft when manually moving the propeller, unusual vibrations transmitted to the hull during navigation at different engine speeds, and visible play between the collar and its seat that can lead to metallic noises or knocking. It is recommended to inspect the collar at each annual beaching or seasonal maintenance, checking the condition of the contact surface and the absence of galvanic corrosion, especially in aluminum parts exposed to marine environments. Replacing the collar preventively when detecting any play or signs of wear prevents costly damage to the tail shaft that can leave the boat immobilized at sea.
