Description

Function and technical context

The shaft collar is an axial positioning and retention component that works directly on the drive shaft, keeping it properly aligned and preventing unwanted longitudinal displacement within the boat's drive assembly. Its function is critical in the power transmission system: it acts as a mechanical stop that prevents the shaft from axially migrating under the thrust load generated by the propeller in navigation. This 28 mm diameter collar in standard size (STD) is designed for Mercury engine applications and MG group brands, guaranteeing a precise fit on the shaft without clearances that could generate vibrations, premature bearing wear or loss of propulsive efficiency. If the collar deteriorates, cracks or loses its retention capacity, the shaft can move axially, causing damage to seals, bearings and sealing seals, with the consequent risk of water entering the hull or total loss of control of the boat.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a shaft collar in poor condition are: abnormal vibrations or knocking perceived in the transmission area during navigation, visible or perceptible axial play when moving the shaft manually with the engine stopped, and wear or scuff marks on the contact surface of the collar or the shaft itself. It is recommended to inspect the collar at each beaching or seasonal inspection, and replace it preventively if there is any sign of corrosion, deformation or loss of adjustment, since a failure in navigation can compromise the tightness of the system and lead to much higher cost repairs.
