Description

Function and technical context

Shaft anodes are cathodic protection elements designed to be mounted directly on the tail shaft of the vessel, acting as an electrochemical sacrifice against galvanic corrosion that affects propellers, horns and other submerged metal components. This Reggiani anode for 30 mm shaft works in the underwater propulsion system, interposing its zinc mass between the noble metal of the shaft and the salt or brackish water, attracting the corrosive action to itself. Without adequate cathodic protection, the shaft, propeller and bushings suffer accelerated degradation that can compromise the structural integrity of the transmission line and lead to costly shipyard repairs.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the shaft anode has reached the end of its useful life is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately 50% of its volume, it must be replaced immediately, as its protective capacity is compromised. When sailing in salt or brackish waters, it is recommended to inspect it at each seasonal stranding and replace it at least once a year, although in areas of high electrolyte aggressiveness it may be necessary to do so at shorter intervals. Changing the anode preventively at the beginning of each season is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion of the shaft and associated propulsion elements.
