Description

Function and technical context

The shaft anode is the cathodic protection element mounted directly on the tail shaft of the vessel, acting as a sacrificial metal to deflect galvanic corrosion that would otherwise attack higher value metal components such as the propulsion shaft, propeller hub or thimble fasteners. This TEN00415E reference anode is designed specifically for 50 mm diameter shafts and is supplied as a complete assembly – including the two halves and the fixing hardware – making it easy to assemble without having to remove the propeller or remove the boat from the water in most cases. Made of marine grade zinc alloy, it guarantees a progressive and controlled electrochemical dissolution, keeping the structural parts of the transmission line protected against the attack of salt, brackish or contaminated water.

When to replace this part?

Shaft anodes must be inspected at least once a season and replaced when they show wear greater than 50% of their mass, since below this threshold they no longer offer effective protection against galvanic corrosion. The most common symptoms that indicate that the anode has exhausted its useful life are: shaft surface with pitting or reddish-orange discoloration, propeller with signs of corrosion in the hub area and unusual vibration associated with incipient damage to the shaft. As a professional rule, changing the complete anode at the beginning of each nautical campaign is the most cost-effective preventive measure to avoid replacing a propulsion shaft, a significantly more expensive intervention that requires grounding.
