Function and technical context

The full radice anode for 22 to 25 mm shaft is a cathodic protection element that is installed directly on the tail shaft of the boat, between the horn and the propeller, acting as a galvanic sacrifice to protect the submerged metal parts of the hull and the transmission line. Its function is to attract the electrolytic corrosion caused by seawater on noble metals such as bronze, stainless steel or aluminum, consuming itself instead of damaging more expensive structural components. Being a complete radice anode, it integrates the protective body into a single piece designed for secure mounting and continuous electrical contact with the shaft, guaranteeing uniform protection throughout the entire sailing season. A depleted or missing anode exposes the shaft, horn, stern lock and propeller to accelerated corrosion that can compromise the structural integrity of the propulsion line and cause serious navigational breakdowns.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that a shaft anode needs to be replaced is a reduction in mass of more than 50%, at which point its protective capacity drops dramatically; Visually it will appear reduced, with rounded and irregular edges and a very porous whitish or grayish surface. As a general preventive maintenance rule, saltwater zinc anodes should be inspected at least once during the season and replaced at the end of each season, or sooner if wear exceeds half their volume. Replacing the anode at each grounding is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion of the tail shaft, horn and propeller, whose repair or replacement involves a much higher cost.
